About Us
The Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (CONTRALESA) is a national organization that unites traditional leaders across South Africa. Established in 1987 by traditional authorities from KwaNdebele, with support from the United Democratic Front and the African National Congress, CONTRALESA was formed to advocate for the rights and recognition of traditional leadership within the country's governance structures. CONTRALESA was established in response to the marginalization of traditional leadership under the apartheid regime. Traditional leaders sought to reclaim their authority and play a constructive role in the country's transformation. Since its inception, CONTRALESA has been instrumental in advocating for the inclusion of traditional leadership in South Africa's democratic processes.
To be a unified, progressive, and influential organization of traditional leaders that is politically non-aligned, self-sustainable, and focused on cultural and economic development, thereby contributing actively to the growth and prosperity of South Africa.
CONTRALESA remains committed to the principles of unity, cultural integrity, and socio-economic development. We strive to ensure that traditional leadership continues to play a vital role in South Africa's democratic society, contributing to national unity and progress.
