Becoming a member of the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (CONTRALESA) means joining a national movement committed to protecting traditional leadership, cultural heritage, and the rights of rural communities. Whether you are a traditional leader, a council member, or a supporter of indigenous governance, CONTRALESA welcomes your participation in shaping a just, inclusive, and culturally rooted South Africa.

Who Can Become a Member?

CONTRALESA Membership is open to:

  • Traditional Leaders (Kings, Queens, Chiefs, Headmen and Headwomen)
  • Traditional Councillors
  • Families of Traditional Leaders
  • Staff employed by Traditional Authorities
  • Supporters of the institution of traditional leadership
  • Organisations aligned with CONTRALESA’s vision (Associate Membership)

Membership Catergories

  1. Full Membership: For recognised traditional leaders and associated individuals. Full members have voting rights and can stand for election.

  2. Associate Membership: For organisations or individuals aligned with CONTRALESA’s mission but not traditional leaders themselves. Associate members do not have voting rights but may participate in programmes and events.
      
  3. Honorary & Life Membership: Granted to individuals who have rendered outstanding service to CONTRALESA and the advancement of traditional leadership.

Membership Fees

  • Once-off Annual Membership Fee: R50
  • Monthly Subscription: R10 p/m
  • Additional levies may be determined by local or provincial branches to support regional programmes

How to Apply

  • Get the Membership Form 
  • Fill it out and submit it to your nearest local branch or provincial office
  • Make your membership fee payment (details provided on the form)
  • Await confirmation and onboarding by the respective council

Member Rights & Responsibilities

As a CONTRALESA member, you have the right to:

  • Vote in elections (if in good standing)
  • Be elected into leadership positions
  • Participate in all CONTRALESA events, meetings, and councils
  • Contribute to policy, governance, and development discussions

You are expected to:

  • Uphold the Constitution and principles of CONTRALESA
  • Pay membership fees on time
  • Promote unity, respect, and cultural preservation
  • Attend meetings and actively participate in your local/provincial branch
